Better Flatbed Trucking

The Modular Transportation Approach to Onboarding: Why We Reject Mass-Call Recruiting

Finding drivers to fill cabs isn’t hard in today’s market, but keeping good ones is.

At Modular Transportation, stability is our top priority. We’ve been around for over 55 years and, in that time, we haven’t laid off a single driver. And of our 200 current drivers, 25 have been with us for more than 10 years.

Flatbed trucking is one of the most highly-skilled driving jobs around, so when we onboard new drivers, we’re investing in their training and development. For us, it only makes sense to choose drivers who want to stick around and grow with us.

You’ll feel this difference from your very first call with our recruitment team.

Our Recruiters Don’t Rely On Commission

In an industry notorious for fast turnover, many recruiters are aiming for volume, scrambling to keep their trucks full. At Modular, we’d rather have an empty truck tomorrow than fill it with a driver who won’t be here next month.

Our recruitment team is on salary, so they don’t rely on commission. This is by design. We want our team to be completely transparent about the challenges of flatbed trucking, and what working for us is really like.

Your first day on the job will be exactly as sold. No false advertising.

As our Recruiting Manager, Nicole Rumery, puts it:

“When you monetize the performance of recruiters… they might have to make 200 outgoing calls a day. There’s no quality in that. You’re hitting bullet points and start dates.”

What To Expect On A Recruitment Call with Modular

One of the most important questions Nicole will ask is: “What are your priorities?”

Is it home time? Training? Equipment? Routes? From there, the call goes wherever it needs to go.

We don’t have minimum call quotas per day to try and get butts in seats. Our recruiters have time to speak to you for an hour, if that’s what you need. If your family has questions, our team can make the time to speak with them too.

If Modular isn’t the right fit for you, they’ll tell you so.

Lessons From Outside the Trucking Industry

Our Recruitment Manager, Nicole Rumery, has worked hard to build a recruitment program that creates long-term stability and a solid team culture.

Before stepping into the job, Nicole did a stint in cosmetic medicine, which couldn’t be more different to trucking on paper.

In cosmetic medicine, the complaints she dealt with weren’t for botch jobs, but because customers didn’t know what to expect upfront. The recovery time, the pain levels, the results. That lesson stuck with her.

At Modular, drivers get straight answers from the first call. About training. About home time. About pay progression. About the learning curve. Nothing is dressed up.

Nicole also found it easier to build happy working relationships in the trucking industry. Drivers are straightforward and easy to talk to. Over time, she’s honed a sharp instinct for spotting drivers who’ll be a team player from the get-go.

From Recruiting to Onboarding: Our In-House Training Process

At Modular, everyone goes through an extensive onboarding process, even if you have flatbed experience. New drivers go through a paid multi-day training, with a team who all hold class A licenses and have decades of driving experience between them.

“You have a 45,000 lb round piece of steel on that trailer. We’re not going to just throw you the keys,” Nicole says.

A PowerPoint and an online test just isn’t enough for us. And that’s why we’re so committed to finding the right drivers. We want people who are going to make the investment worthwhile.

If you don’t have flatbed specific experience, we can provide more extensive training for that too, if you’re the right person for the job.
