Flatbed trucking isn’t for everyone. It’s one of the most demanding driving jobs around. It takes more skill, and more responsibility than many other Class A roles.
That’s exactly why some drivers love it. And why others don’t.
This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s an up-front, honest look at what flatbed work involves, who it suits, and what the benefits are.
At Modular Transportation, we’re focused on finding long-term drivers. To do that, we believe in being transparent from the very first conversation.
Why Flatbed Trucking
Flatbed Is a Higher-Skill Driving Job
Flatbed drivers don’t just drive. They manage the load.
That means:
- Securing freight with chains, straps, and tarps
- Checking and re-securing loads throughout the trip
- Coordinating with shippers and receivers
- Taking responsibility for how the freight looks and travels
Compared to dry van work, flatbed is more physical and more hands-on. You’re outside the cab, on the move, with plenty to think about and manage.
For many of our drivers, that added responsibility is what brings better job satisfaction. Hear what our drivers have to say >>
Flatbed Pays More
Because it demands more, flatbed trucking pays more. It consistently ranks among the higher-paid segments in the industry.
In 2022, average flatbed driver pay in the U.S. was around $65,000 per year, with experienced drivers earning $95,000 or more. That’s typically $10,000 to $15,000 higher than other trucking roles.
The pay reflects the skill and accountability required to get the job done. If you’re committed to learning those skills, these salaries are realistic targets for your career at Modular Transportation.
These salaries aren’t a guarantee of what a new driver will be offered, but we do guarantee that we’ll give you the training you need to get there.
Questions To Ask Yourself Early On
As our Recruiting Manager, Nicole Rumery, puts it:
“If you call looking for a truck driving job, I ask you, ‘What are your priorities?’
And you wouldn’t believe how many people are stumped.”
So, before you go any further, it’s worth asking yourself these questions:
- Do you like staying active instead of sitting all day?
- Are you comfortable taking responsibility for your freight?
- Do you take pride in doing a job the right way?
- Are you willing to learn and improve?
If the answer to those questions is no, flatbed probably isn’t your lane. And that’s okay. Take our quiz >>
Why Flatbed Trucking at Modular Transportation
An Opportunity to Upskill: Learning from People Who Know the Job
You don’t need prior flatbed experience to drive at Modular Transportation. What you do need is the right attitude.
All drivers go through the same in-house orientation and training, designed to make sure everyone starts on the same page.
Training is led by people who know the work firsthand. Clint, our lead trainer, drove flatbed at Modular Transportation for 15 years. Four out of five members of our safety and training team hold Class A licenses, and three of them drove for Modular Transportation themselves.
We offer practical training from people who have been there, done that, and know exactly what it takes to succeed.
Drivers who show up engaged, ask questions, and take the training seriously tend to do well.
50+ Years. Zero Layoffs.
Trucking is known for short-term thinking and high turnover. That’s not how we operate.
Modular Transportation has been in business for over 55 years. In that time, we’ve never laid off a driver. Not once.
We would rather leave trucks empty than bring on drivers who aren’t a good fit or who we can’t support long-term. Our focus is retention, not numbers.
Today, more than 25 of our drivers have been with us for over a decade. Others leave and still refer drivers back, and that doesn’t happen by accident.
You’re a Name, Not a Driver Number
You’ll hear a lot of trucking companies talk about “family.” Here, we’re focused on actions, not empty words. This is a job for all of us, at the end of the day.
With that said, we’ll be sure to look after you and your family along the way, with a big range of benefits, from insurance to ample time off.
Day to day, problems are handled by people, not bureaucracy. The office team will get to know you by name. You’ll have a direct line to accounts and HR. And if something goes wrong, we promise it will get addressed.
We want you here for the long haul, so we’ll make it worth sticking around.
What Modular Transportation Looks for in Drivers
We’re not trying to convince anyone to work here. Recruiting the right people is all about compatibility, and that’s a two-way street.
We look for drivers who:
- Are honest about their work history
- Follow through on commitments
- Communicate clearly
- Respect safety and compliance
- Are willing to learn
Personality matters. Arrogance doesn’t go far here. Being open to learning does.
The Right Job for the Right Driver
Flatbed trucking can be challenging. It can also be rewarding, well-paid, and stable for the right driver.
This only works if it’s a fit on both sides. If it is, we’re here to have the conversation.
